“
To me, knitting is synonymous with happiness and friendship,” Jonna Hietala writes in her introduction to the Autumn/Winter 2018 issue of Laine, a Nordic Knit and Lifestyle magazine. In this issue, as in all others, she reflects on the “laughter of knitters,” the joy of knitting, and the community of makers and thinkers brought together from all over the world by the same interests—natural fibers, slow living, and local craftsmanship.
The Laine team has created an informative and inspiring issue with gorgeous photography (set on the strikingly dramatic landscape of Iceland) and lovely writing. Laine is an insight into the craft that is the foundation of strong, international relationships. Stories of makers from all around the world—including Nancy Marchant (Queen of Brioche), Icelandic native Hélène Magnússon, Manos del Uruguay’s yarn collective, and Kristin Ford of Woolfolk—are interspersed with 12 knitting patterns by leading designers, exciting travel articles (Reykjavík!), seasonal recipes, and strong, visual storytelling.
